Bahia Santa Maria — lobster dinner

It finally starts to warm up …

New year day, we just finished another overnight run (270NM), and arrived at Bahia Santa Maria. It really started to feel warm during this leg.

We had hundreds of dolphins joining the trip. They are beautiful creatures, enjoying playing in the bow wakes.


Bahia Santa Maria has a unique landscape. Despite being part of the mainland, it looked like an island from the distance. As we got closer, the whole picture emerged — the “island” was a group of mountains/hills rising up at the end of a loooong stretch of sand bar.

Very remote spot, with a couple of houses

Water temperature is about 70F, still a bit chilly. I dove in, feeling refreshed. Unfortunately, the visibility was poor with the sandy bottom. Just when I was drying my swimsuit in the cockpit, a panga approached us, with 3-4 local mexicans. One guy smiled at me, “Langosta?” Perfect, we just reviewed spanish for lobster. I nodded, showed him 4 fingers. He acknowledged with a nod, and left. We noticed the compresser in the boat.

In about two hours, we heard engine sound. They were back! 4 lobster, freshly caught from the sea.
